The information on this page may change as we release updated versions with changes and new functionality to be documented.

Installation

Before you can run your own MP3 streaming server you must first install it onto your computer. Simply download the latest version of Vibe Streamer, run the installation and follow the instructions in the installation program.

Configuration

After you've installed Vibe Streamer and start it for the first time you're pretty much all ready to begin sharing your music. All you need to do before starting your streaming server is to add one or more users and the directories that you want to share.

Managing users and groups

Before someone can access your stream server he has to have a user account and a password. You can manage the accounts on your streaming server from the "Users and groups" tab. Right-click inside the user or group list to bring up a menu with the availible actions.

When creating a user you are required to specify a username, password and the skin the user will be using when accessing your stream server.

Creating groups and making your users into members is an organised and efficient way to manage the permissions to your shared directories. In a case where a stream server has lots of users, having members sorted in groups can save a lot of time whenever adjustments need to be made.

Managing your shared directories

To make a directory and its subdirectories availible to your users you have to add it to the stream server as a shared directory. You can manage your shared directories from the "Sharing" tab. Right-click inside the share list to bring up a menu with the availible actions.

When adding a directory you are required to specify the path to the folder that you want to share, a virtual name (The name that will be displayed to the users) and also what users and/or groups that will have access to this shared directory. Those without permission to this directory will not at all see the directory.

After you have added a directory it will be queued by Vibe Streamer for indexing. The amount of time an indexing takes depends on the total number of files and subdirectories the directory contains. You can view the details on the indexing progress by clicking "View / Indexing progress" in the menu.

Vibe Streamer will keep re-indexing your shared directories at the time interval you specified when you added the directory. Although, if you know you have made changes to the folder and want Vibe Streamer to index it instantly and allowing the users to see the changes aswell, you can manually queue the directory for indexing by right-clicking the shared directory and selecting the "Index directory" action.

Settings

Vibe Streamer doesn't require any initial configuration of the server settings to run. You can still of course change any of the settings from the "Settings" tab and you can at any time restore to the initial settings by clicking the menu "File" and selecting "Restore default settings".

Security

If you want to restrict one or more users to only be able to connect from a specified IP address, or if you want to keep all IP addresses except your own from logging onto your server, you can do that from the "Security" tab. Right-click inside the ip access list to bring up a menu with the availible actions.

When you add a new access rule you must specify which user and what IP adress the rule should apply to. The IP address field accepts full IP addresss and wildcards. You also have to specify whether the rule should allow or disallow the user from logging on to your server.

Connecting to your server

When you're done with the configurations, all that is left is to start your streaming server by clicking the "Start" button in the "Streamserver" tab, and have your users connect to it through their browser.

To find out the IP address that your server is using by the dropdown for IP address in the settings tab. It will list all the available IP addresses your server can use. If you haven't changed any of the IP address settings the server should be configured to "All unassigned", meaning it listens on any of these IP addresses.

If your IP address is 192.168.0.1 and your port is 8081 the adress for your users to browse to would be: http://192.168.0.1:8081 Of course, if you have a domain pointing to that IP address you may also use that in your address: http://<yourdomainname>:8081

If you are behind a router and want to connect to your server from outside your home network you need to use your external IP address. You can find it out by simply browsing to www.whatismyip.org. You probably also need to configure port forwarding so your router forwards any requests to the port the stream server is using, to the computer running the server. More information on this can be found on the forum.
